Should we continue to invest in an AXA-Equitable simple IRA just b/c the employer contributes to plan?

March 22nd, 2008 by IRA Rollover

Kiersten T asked:

My husband (36) now works for a small business that only offered AXA-equitable simple IRA as an investment option. Our only other investment is a rollover 401k that is now sitting with Fidelity. Currently, his boss is matching a percentage of the contributions to AXA, but I still feel like investing in this is a bad idea. Everything I read about variable annuties either sounds bad or doesn’t make sense to me. Right now there is 60% in large cap, 20% in long term bonds, and 20% in int’l equity in this plan, and it’s losing money. Should we continue to contribute since his employer is also contributing or should we be sending whatever savings we can over to the old 401k that’s w/Fidelity?

Withdrawing funds from my 401k plan that was rolled into a IRA?

March 9th, 2008 by IRA Rollover

hughesr7 asked:

I’m in a pretty bad place financially and my only option is to withdraw the funds in a IRA that I rolled my 401k into. I know this is not a smart move but at this time my family only has 1 income and my credit is starting to suffer. I’ve had perfect credit until now and I just can’t afford to let it get worse. I have faith that things will get better I just need to stay caught up with my financial obligations. Thanks for any advice.

Are there advantages in rolling over your lump sum payment from a pension plan to an IRA account?

March 2nd, 2008 by IRA Rollover

Arnel T asked:

I know the advantages of 401K rolling over to an IRA account (i.e. more fund selection, etc.) The pension plan was credited an average of 4% a year for 5 years. The timeframe is 10 to 12 years going forward. If I assume a 10-year average of positive 9% annual return on mutual fund investment, should I rollover the lump sum payment from company pension plan to an IRA account? Is there any hidden advantages in keeping the pension plan? Are there disadvantages in rolling over pension plan lump-sum payment to an IRA aacount?
