I have my IRA in a conventional account which is not giving me much in the way of profits, money is just sitting there. I know that if i withdrew the funds, i will be taxed; however, i was wondering how else can i invest this money. What i would like to do is invest in individual stocks, but how can i do that if its already in an IRA account? Can i tell my bank to put this money into the stocks of my choosing?

I made a 2008 contribution to an existing traditional IRA. It was postmarked April 15 but my mutual fund company sent me a letter saying it arrived too late. It posted to my account on April 22. When I called them after receiving the letter they said it needed to be there by April 18. A phone representative I talked with on April 15 told me they needed to receive the contribution by April 22, and their website only says it needs to be postmarked by April 15.
