motherbruce asked: I got laid off late last year and I withdrew my 401k money that went into a rollover IRA from my employer (it was only about $3000). When I did my taxes I said that I withdrew the money, but I also claimed that it was a rollover, because it was. I got a big tax refund back, but I was just talking to my mom and she said that I should have only done it as a withdrawal. Now I’m scared that the IRS will catch it and ask me for money. So, did I do my taxes wrong?

cl3v3r boy asked: I took an early distribution from my IRA account to finance the purchase of a first home. I took about $900 more than than I needed (the closing costs had been overestimated if you can believe that). I know I can rollover the $900 back into the IRA to avoid the 10% early distribution penalty.
Can I use the $900 as the second month’s payment on the mortgage to have it qualify as a home purchase expense and in this manner avoid the 10% penalty?
